Our History and Vision

Shabbat with Friends NM builds on Rabbi Dov’s decades of community-building experience and spiritual leadership. In 2004, he founded Panim Hadashot–New Faces of Judaism in Seattle, Washington, an initiative that reimagined Jewish engagement through hospitality, shared meals, the a revival of Jewish table singing.

Founded in 2022, Shabbat with Friends NM expands significantly on those original Seattle innovations to serve the unique needs and spirit of New Mexico’s Jewish communities.

The Heart of the Initiative

The focus of our work is on the home traditions surrounding the three sacred meals that take place over the seventh day. We organize Shabbat meal gatherings in homes and in special venues throughout central and northern New Mexico, cultivating the Jewish practices associated with the Sabbath home:

• Welcoming guests and sharing food.
• Singing together and conversing about important things.
• Gaining insight through Torah study.
• Through all these activities, we seek to open paths to friendship and fellowship with others.

The Spirit of Oneg and Menuchah

We strive to make Shabbat an Oneg—a physical and spiritual joy—and a day of Menuchah—a rest that revives the spirit and engenders hope in our lives.

The name Shabbat with Friends underlies our commitment to Shabbat hospitality and to cultivating the unique joy of fellowship through the sacred way of Jewish gathering.
